Ingredients

  • 2 –3 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 sheet puff pastry store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • Optional: chopped nuts or sea salt for garnish

Method

Prepare the Apples:
  1. Toss the apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl until evenly coated.
Prepare the Puff Pastry:
  1. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into squares or circles. Place them into a muffin tin or tartlet pan to form small cups.
Assemble the Tartlets:
  1. Add a small pat of butter into each pastry cup, then layer in the apple slices.
Bake:
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the tartlets for 20–25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Add the Caramel:
  1. Drizzle caramel sauce over the warm tartlets. Optional: sprinkle with chopped nuts or a pinch of sea salt.
Serve:
  1. Enjoy slightly warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to keep the tartlets from becoming soggy.
  • Don’t overfill the pastry cups with apples; balance ensures perfect texture.
  • Homemade caramel elevates the flavor if you have the time.
